Where Fuji comes from
Fuji was developed at the Tohoku Research Station of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Fujisaki, Aomori. The cross was begun in 1939, and the cultivar was named and released in 1962; the name comes from the place where it was bred. The parents are Red Delicious and Ralls Janet.
Harvest window and storage
Fuji ripens late: after Gala, McIntosh and Honeycrisp, and about together with Red Delicious. Picking falls at the end of the season, when most early and mid-season cultivars have already been cleared.
The shelf life is very long: under refrigeration the fruit stays fresh for a long time. Growers choose Fuji when they sell from storage in winter and spring, not from the field on picking day.

Climate: the cultivar wants a relatively warm summer
Fuji needs a relatively warm summer. The zone of our M9 tree is Z5–Z8; compare it with your territory on the supply by region page.
Fuji is named as a compatible pollination partner for Gala Royal, and both cultivars are in the nursery stock. We will pick other pollinizers for your block together with you; write to the trade desk.
Fuji in a commercial orchard
Late picking and long storage make Fuji a cultivar for the cold store, not for the first weeks of the season. How to combine early, mid and late cultivars in one orchard is covered in the article apple cultivars for a commercial orchard. Another late cultivar, Pink Lady, needs an even longer warm season.
Zone Z5–Z8 describes winter hardiness by minimum temperature and says nothing about the length of the warm period. For Fuji that matters more than for early cultivars, so check heat sums and first-frost dates against the practice in your district.
Stock and grades
On 9 October 2026 Fuji is available in two grades: 18,000 trees in 1+ and 13,774 in 3+. All trees are knip type on M9; stock and prices per grade are in the table below, the full list is on the sapling prices page, and the other cultivars are in the apple saplings section.
A lot of 6,000 saplings or more can combine any cultivars from the price list in steps of 250 per cultivar. Grading and loading are described under pickup.
A worked example: 8,000 Fuji trees, of which 5,000 in grade 1+ and 3,000 in grade 3+, cost 5,000 × 360 + 3,000 × 400 = RUB 3,000,000. Lifting is possible in October–November 2026 or March–April 2027.
- Grade of the trees: 1+ or 3+.
- Fuji volume as a separate line, in multiples of 250.
- Preferred lifting season.
