Where Gala Schniga Red comes from

Gala Schniga Red was found as a red mutation on the Gala clone Schnitzer Schniga in an orchard at Nals, South Tyrol, Italy. Under the patent the rights belong to the company Schniga GmbH. Patent records list the cultivar as Gala Schnico Red, so catalogs use both spellings.

Fruit colour: what the patent states

The main difference from ordinary Gala clones is measured. The patent compares it with the clone Gala Schnico and gives these figures.

  • Red over-colour covers 100% of the skin, against 80–90% on the comparison clone.
  • There are about 30% more lenticels per unit of skin area than on the comparison clone.

For a sapling buyer this means one thing: if the market appearance of the fruit is decided by colour, this clone covers the apple in red completely. A comparison with another red Gala mutation is on the Gala Royal page.

Harvest window and pollinizers

Gala Schniga Red is counted among early Gala-type apples. The picking schedule is set from trial picks on your own site, and apple cultivars for a commercial orchard covers the general way to stagger cultivars. We will choose pollinizers for a block of this clone together with you; write to the trade desk.

Stock and grades

The stock on 9 October 2026 consists of two grades. Grade 1+ is 41,890 trees at RUB 360, grade 3+ is 25,705 trees at RUB 400. The rootstock is M9 throughout, zone Z5–Z8 on the USDA scale. The stock rows are in the table below and the overall list is on the sapling prices page.

For budgeting: 6,000 trees in grade 1+ cost RUB 2,160,000 and 6,000 in grade 3+ cost RUB 2,400,000. A mixed lot of 4,000 grade 1+ and 2,000 grade 3+ trees comes to 4,000 × 360 + 2,000 × 400 = RUB 2,240,000. Grade 1+ stands at 41,890 trees, so this clone covers a large order without topping up from other cultivars.

The other M9 cultivars, including lines with grade 5+, are listed under apple saplings.

How to order

We do not ship orders below 6,000 saplings, but a lot can combine several cultivars. Trees are loaded onto your vehicle at the nursery yard; details are on the working routine page.
