Where Granny Smith comes from
Granny Smith is a chance seedling found in 1868 at Eastwood, New South Wales, Australia. It was discovered by Maria Ann Smith. The cultivar is not the result of planned breeding.
Harvest and storage
The skin is green. Picking is late, after Golden Delicious, so it is picked toward the end of the season. It keeps for a long time: under suitable conditions, in controlled atmosphere with low oxygen, the apples are held for up to a year. The cultivar produces little ethylene.
The practical point for a business plan: a year of storage is reachable only in a controlled-atmosphere chamber. Storage capacity is planned before the orchard is planted, not after the first crop.
Two storage disorders need watching:
- Superficial scald — controlled with low oxygen in the chamber and a diphenylamine treatment.
- Bitter pit — limited with calcium sprays in the orchard.
Climate and season length
Granny Smith needs fewer winter chill hours than many apples, but its fruit needs a long season to mature. That is why it grows well in mild climates. For zone Z5–Z8, which our saplings are rated for, this means checking before planting whether fruit will mature before autumn frosts on your site. For planting dates see planting saplings in spring or autumn. Picking falls late in the season, and that date is worth building into the crew schedule in advance.
Where Granny Smith fits in a commercial orchard
Long storage makes Granny Smith a cultivar for winter and spring marketing, and late picking puts it at the end of the harvest calendar. Early M9 cultivars such as Gala Royal cover the start of the season, Granny Smith the end. The trade desk will help pick pollinizers for your block.
Stock and price
All Granny Smith stock on 9 October 2026 is 76,000 trees in grade 1+ at RUB 360. The table below shows the stock row, and the full price list for all cultivars is on the sapling prices page. The other M9 cultivars, with grades 3+ and 5+, are collected under apple saplings.
Budget for a minimum lot: 6,000 × 360 = RUB 2,160,000. The stock of 76,000 saplings covers twelve such lots, with 4,000 trees left over. If your orchard layout calls for more developed trees, grades 3+ and 5+ have to come from other cultivars.
Lifting dates and payment are agreed along the routine on the pickup and shipping page.
