Origin: a Golden Delicious clone
Rangers is Reinders, a bud sport of Golden Delicious. It was found in the early 1960s by M. H. Reinders at Helden-Panningen in the Netherlands. The clone was selected for less russeting, so its skin is smoother than on the original cultivar.
Golden Delicious itself is a chance seedling found around 1905 in Clay County, West Virginia, USA, on the J. M. Mullins farm. It may be a Grimes Golden × Golden Reinette hybrid. Stark Brothers first marketed it in 1914.
Fruit quality and storage
Rangers is chosen for its market appearance. In Austrian trials the Reinders type gave a high share of first-class fruit even on unfavourable sites.
- Storage: in ordinary cold storage the fruit lasts roughly until February; in ULO or CA storage, almost a year.
- Picking: Golden Delicious is harvested 130–150 days after full bloom.
- Handling: the fruit bruises and shrivels easily, so it is picked and graded carefully.

Where the cultivar fits in a commercial orchard
For the fresh-apple market, where even skin without russeting matters, Rangers is a better fit than plain Golden. The small stock makes Rangers a line for filling out a block rather than for the main area. If you need Golden Delicious in large volumes, agree the quantity with the trade desk before signing the contract.
