Origin: the PRI program, USA

Williams’ Pride was created by the PRI cooperative program of Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois universities and was tested as Co-op 23. Edwin Williams made the selection in the late 1970s.

The same program bred Crimson Crisp, another scab-immune cultivar. The two are worth comparing for growers who care about resistance to this disease.

Disease resistance

The cultivar is field immune to scab. It is also resistant to powdery mildew and cedar-apple rust.

Harvest and storage

Williams’ Pride is a summer apple: the fruit is picked from late July to mid-August, depending on the district. Ripening is uneven, so the fruit is picked in several passes.

Storage is short: a few weeks in a refrigerator. The cultivar is meant to be sold soon after picking, not from a cold store in winter.

The summer slot in an orchard

In an orchard Williams’ Pride takes the summer slot: it ripens ahead of the bulk of apples and opens the season. The lower limit of its zone is Z4, so it is rated for colder winters than cultivars in zone Z5; check your district on the supply by region page.

The trade desk will advise on pollinizers for your block before you size the lot. A comparison of cultivars by harvest window is in the article apple cultivars for a commercial orchard.

Z4–Z8 is the winter hardiness of the M9 tree on the USDA scale. It accounts for neither spring frosts at bloom nor summer humidity, and fruit set depends on both, so check those data for your plot too.
