Where Crimson Crisp comes from
Crimson Crisp was bred under the PRI cooperative program of three US universities: Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois. In trials it ran as Co-op 39. It is a seedling from a cross of two Rutgers selections made in 1971, and it was screened for scab at Purdue in 1972. In the mid-2000s HortScience described it as a red apple immune to scab, carrying the Vf gene from Malus floribunda 821. The cultivar is sold under the CrimsonCrisp® mark.
Disease: scab immunity
The main trait is immunity to scab. In the field it is not infected by the common US races of scab, thanks to the Vf gene. Against other diseases its resistance is only partial. Vf immunity protects against scab, not against every fungal disease, so the rest of the protection programme stays in place.
- Scab: field immunity to the common races (Vf gene).
- Fire blight: moderately susceptible.
- Cedar-apple rust: moderately susceptible.
- Powdery mildew: moderately susceptible.
The Vf gene is also carried by other cultivars in our stock: Modi from Italy and Inored Story from France. Their origins differ.
Harvest and storage
Crimson Crisp ripens in autumn and the fruit hangs on the tree for a long time, which stretches the picking window. In a cold room it keeps for a few months. The picking date on your site is set from the first bearing trees.
Zone Z4–Z8 and where the cultivar fits
Crimson Crisp is rated Z4–Z8 on the USDA scale, while most cultivars in stock are rated Z5–Z8. The rootstock is M9 throughout, but the cultivar itself is stated for colder winters, which matters when choosing a site. Scab immunity, red colour and the wider zone make it a cultivar for farms where scab is the main problem of the season and a red dessert fruit is wanted for autumn sales. How to choose cultivars for an orchard layout is covered in apple cultivars for a commercial orchard.
Stock and grades
On 9 October 2026 the stock is 39,821 trees in grade 1+, 2,035 in grade 3+ and 15,745 in grade 5+. Grade 3+ is the smallest here. The stock rows are in the table below, prices for all cultivars are on the sapling prices page, and the other M9 cultivars are under apple saplings.
A grade 3+ lot cannot be made from Crimson Crisp alone: 2,035 trees is below the 6,000 minimum, so the grade is topped up with other grades of this cultivar or with other cultivars. For grade 5+ the arithmetic is this: 6,000 trees cost RUB 2,700,000, and the stock of 15,745 trees covers two such lots.
A lot starts at 6,000 saplings in steps of 250 per cultivar. How the contract is made and trees are collected is on the shipping routine page.
