Modi is an Italian cultivar from a cross of Gala and Liberty. It is resistant to scab and is part of a club licensing system for the fruit.
As of 9 October 2026 the Sady Stavropolya nursery has 49,000 Modi knip apple trees on M9 rootstock in stock: 44,000 in grade 1+ at RUB 360 and 5,000 in grade 3+ at RUB 400. Modi has no grade 5+ in stock. All prices include VAT, the hardiness zone is Z5–Z8 on the USDA scale, and pickup is from the yard in Sunzha.

Where Modi comes from
Modì was bred by the Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti (CIV) in Ferrara, Italy. The parents are Gala and Liberty. The Gala clones in our stock are Gala Royal, Gala Schniga Red and Gala Devil, and from Liberty the cultivar inherited the Vf gene responsible for scab resistance. The cross is placed in the 1980s–1990s, and the cultivar reached the market in the 2000s.
Modi is a club cultivar. The Modì Europe consortium holds the licence and manages it, and the fruit is sold under the Modì® mark. Check the licence terms for commercial fruit before buying saplings.
Disease resistance
The cultivar is very resistant to scab thanks to the Vf gene. It is also considered tolerant of powdery mildew and aphids. Other cultivars in our stock carry the Vf gene too: Crimson Crisp from the USA and Inored Story from France, with different origins.
Fruit, picking time and storage
- Taste: the fruit is crisp, sweeter than Gala but with good acidity; the flesh is creamy.
- Picking: mid-season, before Golden Delicious.
- Storage: in commercial stores the fruit keeps for a few months.
Pollination

Where Modi fits in a commercial orchard

The Z5–Z8 zone on the USDA scale matches most apple lines in stock, and Modi can be combined with them in one lot.
Stock and grades
On 9 October 2026, 44,000 Modi trees are grade 1+ and 5,000 are grade 3+. The table below shows both rows, and combined prices for all cultivars are on the sapling prices page. The other M9 cultivars, including grade 5+, open from apple saplings.
A grade 3+ lot cannot be made from Modi alone: 5,000 trees is below the 6,000 minimum. A lot of 6,000 grade 1+ trees costs 6,000 × 360 = RUB 2,160,000, and the grade 1+ stock of 44,000 trees covers seven such lots.
