Where Green Star comes from
Green Star is the trade name of the cultivar Nicogreen. Johan Nicolai of Sint-Truiden, Belgium, bred it by crossing Delcorf with Granny Smith. US plant patent PP16,559 was published in 2006.
Granny Smith is in the parentage of Green Star, but the new cultivar bears yellow-green fruit and is picked earlier.
Fruit and harvest window
According to the patent, the fruit weighs 240 g on average and measures 78 × 83 mm. The flesh is white, very firm and juicy.
Green Star ripens earlier than Granny Smith, before the late group. The article on apple cultivars for a commercial orchard shows how to arrange cultivars across the picking calendar.
Storage
The patent rates keeping quality as very good. After 9 months at 1 °C, flesh firmness by penetrometer was 8.5 kgf/cm².
Rootstock and pollination
The Green Star tree has medium vigour. For M9 rootstock the support is set up at once and stays for the life of the orchard. How M9 behaves in an intensive orchard is covered in M9 rootstock for an intensive orchard, and all rootstocks are on the rootstocks page.
The pollinizer for Green Star is chosen when the lot is calculated. State the block area and neighbouring cultivars, and the trade desk will suggest a pair from stock.
Stock, grades and ordering
As of 9 October 2026 Green Star is in stock in three grades by branch count. Grade 3+ has 20,360 trees, and grades 1+ and 5+ have 15,270 each. The table below shows stock per row, and other prices are on the sapling prices page.
Each Green Star grade on its own is larger than the minimum lot of 6,000 trees. The difference between grades 1+ and 5+ on such a lot is RUB 540,000.
| Grade | Price per tree | Lot of 6,000 trees |
|---|---|---|
| 1+ | RUB 360 | RUB 2,160,000 |
| 3+ | RUB 400 | RUB 2,400,000 |
| 5+ | RUB 450 | RUB 2,700,000 |
Handover is on pickup only, from Sunzha in the windows of October–November and March–April, and a phytosanitary certificate goes with the lot. Payment is split into 30% on signing the contract and 70% 10 days before shipment, see how pickup works.
Other M9 cultivars are listed in apple saplings.
