Where Sweet Lorenz comes from
Sweet Lorenz was bred at the University of Bologna by S. Lugli, M. Grandi and R. Correale. The starting material was a seedling of unknown cross found around 2000 in Vignola near Modena. It was planted in February 2002, bore its first fruit in 2004 and carried the working code PA2UNIBO.
The university protected the cultivar. The US plant patent USPP25982 was issued in 2015, and the EU plant variety right was granted in 2018.
Ripening and bloom
Sweet Lorenz ripens about 10 days after Burlat and about 8 days before Bing. Around Modena the picking window runs from 30 May to 7 June. The cultivar blooms 1–2 days before Burlat.
Lapins is picked 10–14 days after Bing, which is clearly later than Sweet Lorenz.

Pollination of Sweet Lorenz
Sweet Lorenz is not self-fertile (S3S4), so a block of one cultivar will not set fruit. The breeder names Sweet Aryana and Sweet Gabriel as pollinizers, and the patent adds Sweet Saretta.
These are not nursery cultivars, so pollinizers for a block are chosen together with the trade desk. Pollination schemes for cherries are in Kordia, Regina and pollinizers.
Rootstocks, stock and ordering
In the patent trials the trees grew on Colt and Gisela 6 rootstocks. The choice between Gisela 5 and Gisela 6 is covered in the article Gisela 5 or Gisela 6, and all rootstocks are on the rootstocks page.
As of 9 October 2026 Sweet Lorenz is on two rootstocks, 200 trees on Gisela 5 and 5,900 on Gisela 6, 6,100 in total. The price is the same, RUB 800 incl. VAT per tree, stock per row is in the table below, and other cultivars are priced on sapling prices.
A lot of 6,000 trees costs RUB 4,800,000. Gisela 6 alone is 100 trees short, so those come on Gisela 5.
Sweet Lorenz leaves the nursery yard in Sunzha in the October–November and March–April windows. The buyer pays 30% on signing and 70% ten days before shipment, and the pickup page sets out the rest.
Other cherry cultivars are in cherry saplings.
