Lapins: origin and traits
Lapins was created at the Summerland research station in British Columbia, Canada, by the Latvian-born breeder Karlis Lapins. He made the Van × Stella cross in 1965; the cultivar was released in the early 1980s, after he had retired, and carries his name.
| Trait | Value |
|---|---|
| Breeding | Summerland station; Van × Stella cross, 1965 |
| Ripening | late; ripens 10–14 days after Bing |
| Fruit | large, dark red, high quality |
| Rain cracking | good resistance |
| Pollination | self-fertile, S1S4 genotype |
Pollination: Lapins is self-fertile
Lapins is self-fertile, so a single-cultivar block does not need a neighbouring pollinizer. It is also a good pollinizer for other sweet cherries.
Summit, Ferrovia and Samba are self-sterile and will not set fruit without a pollinizer. The trade desk will help match pollinizers to your block: write to the sales team. General pollination schemes for sweet cherry are covered in the article on Kordia, Regina and pollinizers.
Ripening window and fruit quality
Lapins ripens late, 10–14 days after Bing. Summit ripens mid-season and Samba in the early-to-mid window, so in a mixed block Lapins is picked after both. The fruit is large, dark red and of high quality, with good resistance to rain cracking.
Lapins on Gisela 5 and Gisela 6
Lapins is available on both rootstocks: 2,600 trees on Gisela 5 and 7,500 on Gisela 6 on 9 October 2026. The price is the same on both, so soil and orchard layout decide the choice, not the price list. The rootstocks are compared in Gisela 5 or Gisela 6.
Which orchards suit Lapins and what a lot costs
Lapins is chosen when four traits of the cultivar matter in the orchard:
- self-fertility: a block of Lapins alone needs no neighbouring pollinizer;
- late ripening: picking starts 10–14 days after Bing;
- a large, dark red berry with good resistance to cracking;
- a choice of rootstock: Gisela 5 or Gisela 6, both in stock.
A lot costs the number of saplings times RUB 800: the rootstock does not change the price, and one order step of 250 saplings costs RUB 200,000.
| Lot option | Saplings | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum lot | 6,000 | RUB 4,800,000 |
| All stock on Gisela 6 | 7,500 | RUB 6,000,000 |
| All Lapins stock | 10,100 | RUB 8,080,000 |
How many saplings your site needs depends on the planting scheme: worked examples are in how many saplings per hectare. The choice between fall and spring planting is explained in spring or fall planting.
How to order Lapins wholesale
The Lapins stock on 9 October 2026 covers the 6,000-sapling minimum lot from this cultivar alone, and the order step is 250 saplings. 6,000 saplings at RUB 800 cost RUB 4,800,000 including VAT. Other prices and crop stock are on the sapling prices page.
Saplings are handed over on pickup in October–November and in March–April, and each lot comes with a phytosanitary certificate. The handover routine is described on the yard process page.
