Ferrovia: origin in Apulia

Ferrovia comes from Apulia in southern Italy, from the area around Turi in the province of Bari. It is the main sweet cherry of the region and the most widely grown cherry in the country. The name means “railway”: by one account the first tree was found beside the rail line between Turi and Sammichele di Bari, by another it grew from a discarded stone. Either way, the cultivar began as a chance seedling.

Ferrovia · cultivar profile

A firm berry for transport

The fruit is very large, slightly pointed, bright red and crunchy; in Italy this type is called “durone”. Ferrovia has firm flesh and thick skin, so the berry travels well and suits export. In Apulia picking runs from mid-May to early June, the middle and end of the local season.

Pollination: a self-incompatible cultivar

Ferrovia is self-incompatible: its own pollen does not set fruit, so another cultivar with overlapping bloom is needed. For Ferrovia the trade desk will pick a pollinizer together with you: contact the sales team. Pollination schemes for self-sterile cultivars are covered in Kordia, Regina and pollinizers.

Stock: enough for a single-cultivar lot

On 9 October 2026 Ferrovia stood at 7,200 trees, more than Summit or Samba. A 6,000-sapling lot can be made of Ferrovia alone by taking both rootstocks, for example 2,500 on Gisela 5 and 3,500 on Gisela 6. Stock on Gisela 6 is almost double that on Gisela 5: 4,700 against 2,500. The order step is 250 saplings.

The price is the same on both rootstocks, and the choice between them depends on soil and orchard layout. The comparison is in Gisela 5 or Gisela 6. Samba and Summit sit next to it in the catalog and are easy to add to the same lot.
