How much it costs to lay a hectare of an intensive apple orchard
Laying a hectare of intensive apple orchard on M9 costs millions of roubles, but estimates vary widely. Here is what the sum consists of, where the different numbers come from and which line can be calculated to the rouble.

In short, by the estimate of one trade blog: RUB 3.5–5.5 million per hectare to lay a super-intensive orchard on M9, and RUB 5–7 million including care until payback, in 2025 prices. That is the blog author’s estimate, not a price list or a budget. So below we go through it line by line, show a second estimate on a different scale and separately calculate the one line that can be calculated exactly, which is saplings at our price list.
What the sum consists of
The cost structure below comes from the article “Average investment in an intensive apple orchard for 2025 in roubles” on the trade blog bozos.ru. It assumes a density of about 2,800 trees per hectare (roughly a 3.5 × 1.0 m scheme on M9). The article cites no external sources, so treat the numbers as a guide.
| Cost item | Share | RUB thousand per hectare |
|---|---|---|
| Saplings | 30–40% | 1,200–2,200 |
| Trellis and supports | 15–20% | 600–1,100 |
| Drip irrigation with fertigation | 12–18% | 500–900 |
| Soil preparation and planting | 10–15% | 400–700 |
| Care for 2–3 years until fruiting | 15–20% | 700–1,400 |
| Design and other | 3–7% | 150–350 |
The lines cannot simply be added up: they are ranges, and the sums of their ends do not match the blog’s own total. Read the table as an order of magnitude. Saplings are the largest share, followed by trellis and care. The trellis cannot be struck off the budget, because M9 needs support for the whole life of the tree. The blog’s total is RUB 3.5–5.5 million to lay and RUB 5–7 million with care until payback.
A second estimate from Michurinsk university
For central Russia, costs were calculated by Trunov, Bryukhina and Medelyaeva of Michurinsk State Agrarian University (journal Nauka i obrazovanie, 2024). Their numbers are noticeably lower:
| Orchard type | RUB thousand per hectare |
|---|---|
| Intensive without support | 957 |
| Intensive on a trellis | 2,131 |
| Super-intensive on a trellis | 2,957 |
This is a different scale, not a refutation of the first estimate. The calculation is for another region, on its own price base and with different cost components, so these numbers cannot be compared directly with the RUB 3.5–5.5 million range. Both estimates share one thing: planting material takes a noticeable share, 30–40% in the blog and 18–40% at the university.
The sapling line at our price list
This line can be calculated without estimates. On the price list of 9 October 2026 an apple knip tree on M9 costs RUB 360 in grade 1+, RUB 400 in grade 3+ and RUB 450 in grade 5+, VAT included. We multiply by the number of trees per hectare. How those numbers come out for each scheme is shown in how many saplings per hectare.
| Scheme, m | Trees per hectare | 1+ (RUB 360) | 3+ (RUB 400) | 5+ (RUB 450) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 × 1.2 | 2,381 | 857,160 | 952,400 | 1,071,450 |
| 3.5 × 1.0 | 2,857 | 1,028,520 | 1,142,800 | 1,285,650 |
| 3.0 × 1.0 | 3,333 | 1,199,880 | 1,333,200 | 1,499,850 |
| 3.5 × 0.8 | 3,571 | 1,285,560 | 1,428,400 | 1,606,950 |
Between the sparsest and the densest scheme in this table the difference at grade 3+ is RUB 476,000 per hectare, from RUB 952,400 up to RUB 1,428,400. A reserve for replanting is usually added to the calculated number of trees. The article on sapling counts suggests 3–5%, rounded up. Here is the result with a reserve:
| Scheme, m | With 3% reserve, pcs | With 5% reserve, pcs | Sum, RUB (from 1+ at 3% to 5+ at 5%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 × 1.2 | 2,453 | 2,501 | from 883,080 to 1,125,450 |
| 3.5 × 1.0 | 2,943 | 3,000 | from 1,059,480 to 1,350,000 |
| 3.0 × 1.0 | 3,433 | 3,500 | from 1,235,880 to 1,575,000 |
| 3.5 × 0.8 | 3,679 | 3,750 | from 1,324,440 to 1,687,500 |
For grade 3+ with a 5% reserve the sums come out almost round: RUB 1,000,400, 1,200,000, 1,400,000 and 1,500,000 per hectare. The table counts saplings only. Land, netting, drip irrigation, trellis, planting and care are not in it, and their prices come from separate commercial quotes.
There is a practical caveat. Our minimum lot is 6,000 saplings, which covers roughly 1.6–2.5 hectares depending on the scheme and the reserve. The hectare here is a unit of comparison, not the size of an order.
A certified sapling and a cheap one
By the same trade blog’s estimate, the difference between a certified virus-free sapling and a cheap one is RUB 200–400 per tree, that is RUB 0.5–1.1 million per hectare. In scale that is comparable to table lines such as soil preparation with planting or drip irrigation. So the question “what exactly was bought” weighs as much as “at what price”. What to check in the documents and in the lot itself is covered in the nursery selection checklist.
How to use the calculation
- Choose the planting scheme. It sets the number of trees, the trellis and the amount of work; M9 and its limits are described on the page rootstocks for apple and sweet cherry.
- Choose the sapling grade. The differences between 1+, 3+ and 5+ are explained on the page apple knip trees.
- Add a 3–5% reserve and round up.
- Request quotes for trellis, netting and irrigation, as these lines are not in our price list.
- Check whether a subsidy covers part of the cost. The amount depends on planting density through a coefficient, details in subsidies for laying an orchard. The base rate comes from the regional ministry, which is why it is absent from our tables.
- Match the payment schedule. Ours is 30% on signing the contract and the balance 10 days before pickup. Lifting windows and payments in roubles are on the pre-order page.
Need a sapling calculation for your scheme?
Send the area and planting scheme. We will return the tree count with reserve and the lot price from the price list. The minimum lot is 6,000 saplings.

The essentials, in brief.
How much does it cost to lay a hectare of intensive apple orchard?
By the estimate of the trade blog bozos.ru in 2025 prices, RUB 3.5–5.5 million per hectare for a super-intensive orchard on M9 and RUB 5–7 million including care until payback. Michurinsk university gives, for central Russia, RUB 2,131 thousand per hectare for an intensive orchard on a trellis and RUB 2,957 thousand for a super-intensive one. These are different scales, and only a budget gives an exact sum. What share of the cost is saplings?
By the bozos.ru blog, 30–40% (RUB 1.2–2.2 million per hectare); by Michurinsk university’s estimate, 18–40% of total investment. At our price list of 9 October 2026, grade 3+ saplings for a 3.5 × 1.0 m scheme cost RUB 1,142,800 per hectare without reserve. How much do saplings per hectare cost at your price list?
For a 3.5 × 1.0 m scheme that is 2,857 trees: RUB 1,028,520 in grade 1+, RUB 1,142,800 in grade 3+ and RUB 1,285,650 in grade 5+, VAT included, without reserve. With a 5% reserve (3,000 trees) the result is from RUB 1,080,000 to 1,350,000.Do trellis, netting and irrigation count in this sum?
No. Our table has only the price of saplings. Trellis, netting, drip irrigation, soil preparation and care are priced separately, from contractors’ commercial quotes.Does sapling quality change the cost of a hectare?
By a trade blog’s estimate, a certified virus-free sapling costs RUB 200–400 more per tree than a cheap one, that is RUB 0.5–1.1 million per hectare. So compare not only the price per piece but also the documents for the lot.
