Apple cultivars for high-density orchards in India
The nursery’s price list has six apple cultivars from the list that FreshPlaza gives for high-density plantings in Kashmir. Interfax reported that the cultivars of the first batch to India were chosen together with Indian specialists to suit the country’s soils and climate.
| Cultivar | What we know about it |
|---|---|
| Gala Schniga Red | early Gala type, red colour covers the whole skin |
| Jeromine | dark red colour, white, sweet, low-acid flesh |
| Fuji | late season, suited to warm summers |
| Granny Smith | green skin, picked late, needs a long season to mature |
| Golden Delicious Rangers | Golden Delicious clone with smoother skin and less russeting |
| Red King Roat | named in the same list, stock is in the table below |
The other apple cultivars on the price list are on M9 too, and the whole range is in the apple sapling catalog.
Knip trees and high-density planting
A knip tree is an apple that grew as a single stem for one year and then spent a second year building a trunk with side branches. After grafting, the stem is cut back to its top bud at the end of the first year, and in the next year that bud grows into a central leader with side branches, called feathers. Feathered trees start cropping earlier than unbranched one-year trees, although they cost the nursery more to grow.
- Grade 1+: one or more branches in the crown, RUB 360 per tree.
- Grade 3+: three or more branches, RUB 400 per tree.
- Grade 5+: five or more branches, RUB 450 per tree.
These are the RUB wholesale prices on 9 October 2026, and for export the price and currency are confirmed in the quote. According to Kashmir Reader, traditional orchards in Kashmir plant about 250 trees per hectare and high-density ones up to 3,000, and the region’s first high-density orchard dates from 2014.
The page on knip apple trees explains the grades, and the article on M9 rootstock for intensive orchards covers the rootstock.
