Where Gala Devil comes from
Gala Devil is a bud mutation of Gala. It was found and selected in Italy by Vivai F.lli Zanzi of Ferrara. The market name is Devil Gala, and the Sady Stavropolya price list records it as Gala Devil.
Two other Gala clones are in stock, Gala Royal from New Zealand and Gala Schniga Red from South Tyrol. All three are on M9 at the same price per grade.
Colour, fruit and harvest window
Gala Devil is marked by a very intense dark red colour over the whole fruit. According to Zanzi, it shows about 7 days earlier than on other early Gala clones.
The fruit measures 65–80 mm, with crisp, juicy, sweet flesh. The cultivar is among the earliest Gala clones, ripens before Golden Delicious and is picked at the start of the season.
Storage and marketing
In ordinary cold storage Gala Devil apples last until December, and controlled atmosphere extends that. Without it, marketing is planned for autumn and early winter.
How to spread early and late cultivars across the picking calendar is shown in the article on apple cultivars for a commercial orchard.
Pollination of Gala Devil
Gala Devil is not self-fertile and needs a pollinizer for a crop. Four cultivars are named, all in the nursery stock as of 9 October 2026:
- Golden Delicious, through its clone Golden Delicious Rangers, 10,000 trees in grade 1+;
- Granny Smith, 76,000 trees in grade 1+;
- Fuji, 31,774 trees in grades 1+ and 3+;
- Jeromine, 8,938 trees in grade 1+.
The pollinizer and number of rows beside Gala Devil are settled with the trade desk when the lot is calculated.
Stock, grades and ordering
The trees are grafted on M9 rootstock, which needs support for the whole life of the orchard. The rootstocks are compared in M9 rootstock for an intensive orchard and on the rootstocks page.
As of 9 October 2026 Gala Devil is in stock in two grades. Grade 3+ has 17,160 trees, about 65% of the stock of this cultivar, and grade 1+ has 9,120. There are no grade 5+ trees for this cultivar. The table below shows stock per row, prices are on the sapling prices page, and other M9 cultivars are in apple saplings.
A minimum lot of 6,000 trees costs RUB 2,160,000 in grade 1+ and RUB 2,400,000 in grade 3+, VAT included.
A Gala Devil lot is collected from the nursery yard in Sunzha in the lifting windows of October–November or March–April. Payment is 30% on signing the contract and 70% 10 days before shipment, see how pickup works.
