The republic’s orchards over five years

Perennial fruit and berry plantings in North Ossetia have almost doubled, from about 2 thousand ha in early 2020 to 3.65 thousand ha, and 5.1 thousand ha are planned by 2030. In the Prigorodny district one farm holds orchards of more than 780 ha and the largest fruit store in the south of Russia, 50 thousand t (2022 data).

Growth in output is tied to intensive orchards, and those need knip trees on M9 rootstock with a developed crown. The rootstock is covered in detail in M9 rootstock for an intensive orchard.

Wet foothills and a zone of about 7

The Vladikavkaz station in the foothills records 883 mm of precipitation a year, a January mean of −1.9 °C and an absolute minimum of −27.8 °C. That is clearly wetter than lowland orchards. Vladikavkaz sits at roughly zone 7 on the caudex.ru list, and the ranges Z4–Z8 and Z5–Z8 of all matched cultivars cover that zone.

Matching: scab-resistant cultivars first

Because the foothills are wet, the nursery put cultivars with scab resistance at the head of the match. Gala Royal and Jeromine are not in it, since by description they are susceptible to scab.

Three late cultivars, Granny Smith, Fuji and Pink Lady, are not offered for the foothills. They need a long season and a warm summer, and Pink Lady a hot climate as well. Geneva ripens early and hardly keeps, so its fruit should go to sale straight after picking.

Sweet cherry for a wet climate

For cherries in this climate, rain cracking of the fruit matters. Samba has low to medium sensitivity to it, Sweet Lorenz medium-low by the breeder’s statement, and Summit fair resistance.

Pickup from Sunzha

Vladikavkaz is about 200 km from the nursery in a straight line, and your truck or a hired carrier collects a lot of 6,000 saplings or more from the yard in Sunzha. Lifting windows are October–November and March–April, and the dispatch routine is on the yard process page.

Prices and lot calculation

On 9 October 2026 a knip apple tree on M9 costs RUB 360 in grade 1+, RUB 400 in 3+ and RUB 450 in 5+, a cherry sapling costs RUB 800, VAT included. A lot of 6,000 grade 1+ saplings comes to 6,000 × 360 = RUB 2,160,000; 30% is paid on signing and 70% 10 days before shipment.
